Texas Thanksgiving Part II

Here are the pictures from Borger. I really thought I had my camera out a whole lot more.

Hey! A picture of us! Thanks, Linds.

Football!

Watch out, Ryan!

He's so cute.
All of 'em.

Do boys need an excuse to tackle? No ball, no problem.

Olivia ventured outside for a moment. But she was getting lots more attention inside.

This is why they love their Aunt Shanna so much. She chases them!

My two grandmothers
Mama (on the left) taught me to love old movies.
Granny (on the right) tried her darnedest to teach me how to sew. I wish I would have paid closer attention!!!!

Silly faces

Olivia wanted to wear that stocking.
Her Aunt Lindsey watched on while her daddy tried to catch up on sleep for the trip back. :)

Zach and my cousin, Johnathan

ATTACK!

Huddle up and plan better attack

I know--gross. Zach never wants to grow up (He's a Toys-R-Us kid) and I like to encourage him.

Look, Papa! I know you are proud. :)

Buff and Siah. I thought that this was the only picture of my dad, but then I found this...
Dad and Bill
(my best friend's dad and also my parents' neighbor)

Lindsey and Addilyn

I thought this was a classy way to close us out.

Texas Thanksgiving

Last Saturday, Jay and I decided that we would make a whirlwind trip back to Texas for Thanksgiving. After Jay got home from church on Sunday night, the kids and I were waiting in the car for our departure. After about 4 hours of driving, I thought that it might not be too late to turn back around. haha But we pushed ahead and I'm so glad that we did.
We stopped in Mobile, AL the first night and then went on to Dallas the next day. We had planned on staying the night in Dallas, but our hotel stay in Mobile was so awful (Olivia has never slept with us.) that we figured it would be much easier to drive on to Amarillo while the kids were sleeping in the car. We made a pleasant, unplanned stop for dinner and a quick visit with our great friends the Krahn's and Katy Nelson and some of her family. We loaded back up into our toy explosion car and set off for Amarillo. We arrived at Jay's parents' house at 1:00 am (central time). We were exhausted and so happy to see family!

Historic Festival

We had a busy Saturday. One of the many things we did was go to a town nearby that had a Historic Festival going on. It was very interesting, funny, strange, cute, weird, comical, and a blast all rolled into one.

Olivia met this lady and loved her dress. She wanted to get a closer look and touch it. :)

Isaac searched for treasure after taking the pirate oath of "Argh!"

Josiah was pirated.

Josiah was too busy with his yo-yo treasure to pose. Isaac was ready with his blue lips.

I couldn't understand what she was crying for. "Pop pop!" I finally figured out she was wanting a lollipop. I can't get used to it not being called a sucker.

The kids were listening to a pirate story told by a local librarian.

Jay was very excited to try out this pepper jelly. He bought some and I tried it out with him at home--gag! But to each his own. :)

Josiah is always tying something onto himself.

Isaac-The Piratey Coach Driver

Pirate Josiah really gets into it.

Olivia was given a train whistle at one booth. Her brothers coveted that whistle all day long.

Isaac went to the "general store" to get some candy.

She had to get in on the action.

Christopher and Olivia enjoyed some cookies on Santa's sleigh. (Yes, there was a sleigh pulled by reindeer right across from the horse drawn carriage.)

MaKayla and Josiah delivered presents to all the good little boy and girl pirates.

On Dasher, on Dancer...

They had a fashion show that the boys and I went to. The boys went in the room ahead of me and as I walked in, I heard the lady talking about corsets and how they "just didn't have bras back then." Then she went on to tell how to make your own hoops "if you're interested".
It was only fitting because just a few minutes before, we took a tour through the museum. The museum was more like an antique store. It's a very small place and we toured shoulder to shoulder. In other words, once you went in, there was no backing out. We walked into a room that was set up like an old bedroom. On the rocking chair, a corset was very nicely displayed. :) I walked past and turned around to see Isaac casually checking it out. I barely heard him say, "Hmm, that's a nice bra." He nodded his head as if he were a 50 year old man that just looked at a decent pair of penny loafers. What a kid.

My boys seemed interested. But...the corset in the museum put this one to shame.

So did all of these people. The ladies kept nodding their heads up and down and taking mental notes--future costume models.

This was my favorite dress. The lady was modeling someone in mourning, but I could not stop laughing.

I thought this might be more appropriate.

What Are You Dining On?

I read a blog this morning that really got me thinking. So there is your warning. This isn't going to be cute. It won't be nice and neat. It may be a little too much for you. But I just have to say it.
The blog was talking about a church that is in the process of transforming their new building. The church wants to be "relevant", and relevant to them means to have a sparkly, over-the-top building in order to reach out to those around them. As I kept thinking about it, I got madder and madder. I thought, "Yes. Just what we Americans need. Another plastic church to make plastic people feel comfortable!" But then I realized that I should probably quit judging because you never know what God's vision is for that church. AND, I should quit judging and look at my own life.
I immediately thought of this:

We've all seen these cute, little, plastic kitchens. I (am weird) started imagining sitting around a table with people and eating this plastic food. Everyone puts on a fake smile and talks about how wonderful the fake food is. Each of us knows that the food is fake, but we are all too fake to let on that we know. (Just follow me here.) The plastic food is bright and colorful. It isn't messy, and there is no clean up involved. In fact, you don't really have to eat it. Just look at it, smile to the other people at the table, get up and go on with life.
That is one group of people. Another group looks at the fakies sitting at the table, thinks they are nuts (rightfully so), and wants to have nothing to do with the plastic dinner.
How many times have I sat at a table like this and put on that cheesy grin? And how many times have I served a plastic meal to people and thought I was doing them a favor? How many times have my kids watched me serve it to them or someone else? How many times have I been looked at as a fake and even made the idea of the real food something to be avoided? Does that make sense?

I know that there is real food out there. I can eat (and have eaten) the real food and be satisfied, thankful, rejuvenated, healthy...
So why do I go back to the plastic food? Is it because it's simpler? I mean, real food takes time to make, a lot of clean up is involved, it costs something, and sometimes I make a mess all over myself.

I mean all of this spiritually, of course. I don't want to fill my life with fake anymore. I don't want for people to look at me and think that the plastic is as good as it gets!
A relationship with God takes time. Sometimes it's hard and can get a little messier than I'm comfortable with. But isn't it worth it? Isn't it satisfying?
We are all created with a spiritual hunger that only God can fill. All of us have tried to fill it with something else like relationships, money, work, hobbies, activities, and even church... But I want to stand up from the plastic dinner, look everyone in the eye and say, "I'm not going to sit here and pretend that this is satisfying. It's not. Let's go and get some real live, messy food! And then let's serve it to all of those hungry people that we meet each day."

God, would you open my (our) eyes to the places in my life where I have allowed "plastic" things to try and fill me? Help me to strive daily to know you and to make you known.

So, I've been dining on the fact that I think I can make it work myself because I've seen God in control enough...it looks easy, I'm sure I can handle it. Wow, I've been missing out.

What have you been dining on?

CANDY!!!!!!!!!

Here we go!

Trick-or-Treat!

Check out those PINK shoes. This girl loves pink, and if you know me, you know she did not get this from me. But you know what, pink has certainly grown on me since having this little princess.
I couldn't tell if she looked like a ballerina or a girl wearing a poodle skirt because of the mix of her tutu and lacy socks and bright shoes.

My cuties. Josiah and Isaac both changed their minds about 3 times today before they decided on these costumes. Isaac is a little mixed up with his Cowboys helmet and Gators shirt. :)

This makes me smile.

Ready for take-off. Josiah was running at Olivia and making her laugh.

First house.

Olivia ate each piece of candy as it was handed to her. This Shirley Temple/lollipop picture brings a cute song to my head.

Lollipop, lollipop, oh lolli-lolli-lolli...

eagerly awaiting the next trick-or-treaters
